Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announces the addition of the premium sporty 4WD RALLIART trim level to the Galant Fortis sedan series. The new model raises the driving pleasure bar while retaining all the utility and comfort qualities of the base model. RALLIART comes with a price tag of 2,982,000 yen and goes on sale at affiliated dealership throughout Japan today.

Launched in August 2007 Galant Fortis was MMC's first new sedan model in seven years. It has been well received by customers looking principally for everyday utility plus a taste of sporty performance, while the Lancer Evolution X finds favor with those drivers looking to enjoy a serious sport driving experience, participation in motorsport events included. The new Galant Fortis RALLIART strikes an excellent balance between everyday driving comfort and fun-to-drive dynamic performance and as such will meet the needs and demands of a wide spectrum of customers.

Product walkaround

1. Exterior

* The car features a unique front bumper designed to reduce air resistance. Increasing the size of the "jet-fighter" grille, an element of the MMC sedan design identity, both improves engine cooling and with the chrome treatment of its perimeter enhances the premium look to the car. The bottom edge of the bumper is designed as an air dam for improved handling and vehicle stability at higher speeds. * The engine hood uses a lightweight aluminum panel with an air scoop to feed the turbocharger; twin air outlets discharge heat from the engine compartment. * The unique rear bumper accommodates twin tail pipes. The bumper's design enhances airflow control and contributes to better straight-line stability at higher speeds. * The factory-fitted option rear decklid wing-spoiler generates effective downforce. * The grille and trunk lid carry the RALLIART emblem.

2. Interior

* The interior uses an elegant deep black color scheme while the dashboard features an ornamentation panel comprising a geometric check pattern and silver pin beading that adds a mechanical taste and gives the cockpit a sporty, high-quality appearance.
* The unique instrument cluster dials use matte black faces with white high-contrast graphics for excellent legibility.
* The steering wheel and shifter knob are wrapped in luxurious genuine leather. The aluminum accelerator and brake pedals are fitted with non-slip rubber strips.
* The front seats keep the occupant securely and comfortably positioned and use high-grip suede-knit upholstery. The shoulder bolster carries the RALLIART tag.

3. Engine

* Galant Fortis RALLIART is powered by an intercooler-turbocharged 4B11-type 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC MIVEC*1 high-performance engine. With the focus on low- to mid-range torque, the engine uses a single-scroll turbocharger. Optimization of the cooling and exhaust systems boosts output to maxima of 177 kW (240 PS) / 6000 rpm and 343 Nm (35.0 kg-m) / 3000 rpm.
* Galant Fortis RALLIART returns 10-15 mode combined driving pattern fuel consumption of 10.2 km/l (filed with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism), and earns a 3-star rating for emissions that are 50% better than the Japanese 2005 Emission Standards.

*1: Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system

4. Transmission

* Galant Fortis RALLIART is fitted with Mitsubishi's Twin Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission) automated manual transmission that allows the driver both the fun and economy of a manual gearbox plus the convenience and comfort of an automatic transmission. The Twin Clutch SST used on the Lancer Evolution X has been modified for Galant Fortis RALLIART with different ratios for 5th and 6th gears to give improved fuel economy in high-speed cruising on longer trips.
* The driver has the choice of two automated shifting modes: NORMAL for maximum fuel economy and comfort in everyday driving; and SPORT with shift characteristics best suited to sportier performance.

5. Full-time 4WD system

* Galant Fortis RALLIART uses a full-time 4WD system comprising a front helical limited slip differential, an Active Center Differential*2 and a mechanical rear LSD. These components as well as Active Stability Control*3 and Anti-lock Braking*4 are all electronically and integrally managed by Mitsubishi's vehicle dynamics control system to deliver an optimum balance between sure-footed traction and steering feel, cornering and braking performance.
* The driver can select between three ACD modes: TARMAC for dry paved surfaces; GRAVEL for wet tarmac or loose unmade surfaces; and SNOW for snow-covered surfaces.

*2: Electronically regulates the speed differential between front and rear wheels and feeds optimal level of drive torque to each wheel.
*3: Improves stability by suppressing wheel spin and sudden changes in vehicle behavior on slippery surfaces or caused by sudden steering inputs.
*4: Retains braking and steering control by preventing wheels from locking up under emergency braking and also uses Electronic Brake force Distribution for the efficient
distribution of braking power to each wheel for different road surface and vehicle load conditions.

6. Body and chassis

* Galant Fortis RALLIART uses Mitsubishi's RISE high-rigidity safety body that gives enhanced multi-directional crashworthiness in frontal, rear and side collisions. The front bumper, engine hood, fenders and cowl are designed for enhanced pedestrian protection.
* The suspension features stiffer control arms and mountings and the use of high-rigidity cast iron trailing arms at the rear. These changes and optimization of spring rates and shock absorber damping give RALLIART sportier handling, vehicle stability and ride.
* RALLIART uses 16-inch 2-pot caliper ventilated disc brakes at the front and with optimization of front and rear systems; delivers braking that matches its higher power output. * RALLIART rides on 18-inch 7JJ alloy wheels fitted with 215/45R 18 89W tires.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) will display a production-ready electric vehicle, the i MiEV, for the first time ever at the 2009 Melbourne International Motor Show.

i MiEV – which stands for Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle – will be the central attraction at this year’s Mitsubishi display which will also feature the entire line-up of the company’s comprehensive product range, including the newly released Limited Edition RX Outlander.

The i MiEV, a viable zero drive-time emissions, fully electric vehicle, is due to go on sale in Japan during 2009. Currently, the i MiEV is undergoing feasibility studies in several countries around the world, including the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Iceland, Canada, and as recently announced, now in Australia.

Utilising a large-capacity lithium-ion battery system with a charge time of just seven hours, the
i MiEV’s compact, high-output electric motor is able to produce 47kW of power, and 180Nm of torque.

With a top speed of 130 kilometres per hour and a cruising range of between 140 and 160 kilometres, (figures based on Japanese standard tests), the i MiEV is the perfect vehicle for city commuting. And unlike many environmentally friendly vehicles where performance is sacrificed for economy, the
i MiEV’s speed and dynamics are exceptional – in fact, the i MiEV is actually quicker off the mark than its petrol-powered equivalent.

Following the motor show, key stakeholders and members of the public will be given the opportunity to experience the i MiEV’s groundbreaking technology in a motorcade of public demonstrations, specialist briefings and select individual drive experiences.

Other vehicles on display at Mitsubishi’s 2009 Melbourne International Motor Show represent the versatility, style, efficiency, quality and value the company provides with its diverse product line.

The Limited Edition Outlander RX compact four-wheel drive will step into the Melbourne spotlight with added interior appointments, classy exterior accents, a powerful 3.0L V6 MIVEC sports-tuned engine, and added safety features including side and curtain airbags and reversing camera.

Mitsubishi’s NT Pajero will make its Melbourne Motor Show debut following a December release. As the current winner of the two most sought after four-wheel driving awards in Australia - 4x4 Australia magazine’s 4x4 Of The Year and Overlander magazine’s Four-Wheel Drive Of The Year – the NT Pajero blitzes its opposition with more driver and passenger comfort, more power, more towing capacity and better efficiency.

Mitsubishi’s Triton is a work-horse suited for any challenge big or small, on-road or off the map. On display will be the double-cab four-wheel-drive duo of the Triton GLX-R and the stunning Triton Fastback with hard tonneau cover. With a 3.2L CDi engine and Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD system, the Triton is the ideal work or recreational vehicle.

Featuring on the Mitsubishi stand at this year’s show will be the rest of Mitsubishi’s diverse range of quality vehicles including the gutsy and economic small car, the Colt VRX, the sportier Colt Ralliart and the refined practicality of the Grandis people-mover.

Also proudly on display will be the entire Lancer range of vehicles; the opulent sophistication of the Lancer Aspire, the all-out raw power and torque of the Lancer Evolution, the spirited versatility of the Lancer Sportback, the grunt of the Lancer Ralliart and the ever-stylish appeal of the Lancer sedan.

A special Victorian Police Lancer Evolution is set to arrest motor show audiences with its new look. Sporting the high-visibility chequered Victoria Police decals, this special Lancer Evolution has been on duty featuring in numerous public events such as open days, charity events, educational sessions, parades and regular street patrols for the Victoria Police.

For a first-hand encounter with the latest Mitsubishi Lancer, motor show patrons are invited to experience two racing simulators on the top floor of the stand. Designed to give audiences an opportunity to feel the power and responsive handling of Mitsubishi’s latest performance vehicles, the racing simulators will be a point of interest on the stand for the duration of the motor show.

President and chief executive officer of MMAL, Robert McEniry, is thrilled to be unveiling the i MiEV at the Melbourne Motor Show in the lead-up to its Australian feasibility trials.

“The zero drive-time emission electric vehicle has the potential to change the way Australia thinks about automobiles, and will provide a real boost to the environmental lobby. I’m certain Australia will welcome the i MiEV during it’s stay in Australia, and I look forward to seeing the public response at the motor show,” said McEniry.

“And while the i MiEV is the star attraction at our stand, Mitsubishi is offering a great line-up that really demonstrates the quality, performance and styling of our vehicles,” concluded McEniry.

The 2009 Melbourne International Motor Show is at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in Southbank from Friday 27th February to Monday 9th March.

The i MiEV, which stands for Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle, may well become one of the world’s first truly viable zero drive-time emission city commuters in volume production when it is released on the Japanese market this summer.

MMAL’s president and chief executive officer, Robert McEniry, commented that the company expected the vehicle to generate a great deal of interest.

“This is the first time a production-ready electric vehicle has ever featured at an Australian motor show.”

“Hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles are becoming increasingly common in this current environmentally conscious climate, but Australia hasn’t seen anything like the i MiEV before,” said McEniry.

International interest in the vehicle has been considerable. Currently, the i MiEV is undergoing feasibility studies in several countries around the world, including the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Iceland, Canada, and as recently announced, now in Australia.
MMAL will commence a nation-wide feasibility test following the i MiEV’s public introduction centre stage in Melbourne.

Utilising a large-capacity lithium-ion battery system and a compact, high-output electric motor in place of a traditional gasoline power train (based on Japanese and European trial figures) the i MiEV has some impressive technical specifications for a zero drive-time emissions vehicle.

Producing a remarkable 47 kW of power and 180 Nm of instant torque, the i MiEV’s permanent magnet synchronous engine is supported by a revolutionary lithium-ion battery. Batteries are supplied by Lithium Energy Japan, a joint venture formed by GS Yuasa, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Mitsubishi Motors.
The i MiEV’s electric motor is smaller, produces more torque at low revolutions and is quieter than a turbocharged gasoline engine. Most importantly, the i MiEV’s electric motor produces zero emissions.

With total voltage measuring 330V, and total energy output at 16kWh, the compact battery and motor reside under the seating and in the back of the vehicle, allowing four adults to sit comfortably, plus a good sized luggage compartment in the rear of the vehicle. In a small car, this maximisation of space is made possible by the i MiEV’s smart design and long wheelbase of 2550mm.

Requiring seven hours from a normal domestic household 200V power supply for a full battery charge, the i MiEV should ideally be left to recharge overnight, making it perfect for daily commuting over common distances in a city landscape.

Able to reach a top speed of 130 km/h, with a range of around 160 kilometres1 from a single charge, the i MiEV is a rear-wheel drive vehicle with three ‘speeds’: Drive, Eco and Brake.

Drive is the full power mode where the car drives under normal mode. Economic or ‘Eco’ cuts torque output compared to the standard Drive setting. By using the Eco range, the driver can avoid expending excessive charge, and make more efficient use of the remaining power. Brake mode offers high regenerative braking that absorbs as much kinetic energy as possible – restoring power to the battery - and is perfect for downhill driving.

Compared to a similar sized petrol car, the running (fuel/charge) costs per kilometre are roughly one third lower. If charged during off-peak or night time hours the operating costs will be even less2.

The i MiEV, with its groundbreaking technology, will tour Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Adelaide in a motorcade of public demonstrations, specialist briefings and individual drive experiences for key government officials, fleet managers, environmental opinion leaders and the media.

Through this i MiEV program, MMAL will receive feedback from key stakeholders regarding the viability of this cutting-edge technology and, in doing so, lay the foundations for the possible sale of the vehicle in the Australian market.

MMAL Vice President of Brand and Marketing, Paul Unerkov, said the advanced technology and environmental consciousness of the i MiEV manifested Mitsubishi’s brand values going forward.

“Mitsubishi Motors has made huge investments in research and developmental; we are striving to enhance our sustainability initatives, and the i MiEV is a clear demonstration of these principles combined,” said Unerkov.

“And everyone at Mitsubishi Motors is excited about this vehicle. We can’t wait to see the public reaction from the i MiEV’s appearance in Melbourne, and to see the results of our extensive feasibility studies following the motor show.”

1. Range is based on the ‘Japan 10-15 Mode’ drive cycle and may vary depending on a number of factors including use of climate controls, driving style, road conditions, number of passengers and the condition of the vehicle.
2. Based on Japan market conditions.

Mitsubishi's innovative Electric Vehicle (MiEV) range is growing. We've already seen the Mitsubishi I MiEV Sport at the 2007 Tokyo motor show, driven a prototype of the I MiEV hatchback at last year's New York auto show, and now there's a version of the Sport with a large, removable translucent panel in the roof at the 2009 Geneva motor show.

Mitsubishi gave the I MiEV Sport Air a second-generation powertrain, which produces 80 hp and 169 lb-ft of torque (the first-generation system made only 63 hp and 133 lb-ft of torque) that drives the rear wheels. A pack of second-generation lithium-ion batteries tucks below the rear floor and provides the juice. Mitsubishi hasn't released any estimates on the range of this new powertrain, but we know the battery pack is 330 volts.

The design is as futuristic and efficient-looking as you'd expect and it differs little from the original I MiEV Sport seen at the 2007 Tokyo show. Obviously an electric city car with a removable roof has a limited market, but Mitsubishi is showing the flexibility of its electric car platform and reminding us all green cars don't have to be appliances. With 169 lb-ft of torque and a 2160 lb curb weight, the I MiEV Sport Air isn't going to be a rocket, but it should be entertaining enough behind the wheel thanks to the near-silent propulsion and instant torque of the electric motors.

A vehicle like this would look at home on the roads of Europe or Japan, but it's still a stretch to think of something this tiny and electric cruising the streets in the U.S., especially since Mitsubishi hasn't yet confirmed the U.S. will receive an I MiEV at all.

This is the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X GSR FQ-330 SST. It’s the mid-point of the three-tier Evo X range (until the nutty FQ-400 arrives) and it now gets Mitsubishi’s dual-clutch SST transmission, which was previously only available on the 291bhp FQ-300.

The FQ-330 also has the big-piped sports exhaust from the FQ-360, although it doesn’t get any of the carbonfibre aerodynamic trimmings from its bigger brother.

Perhaps most significant, however, is that the torque limiter, which allowed only 50 per cent of twist in first gear on early FQ-300 models, has gone.

The Mitsubishi Evo X FQ330 SST model utilises a breathing kit and ECU re-map to accomplish its enhanced power output to 329 bhp and 437 Nm of torque, and has been systematically tested over the past 6 months to achieve successful results. The extra umpf of the Mitsubishi Evo X FQ330 SST translates into a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of 4.4 seconds and a maxim speed limited to 155 mph.

The new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X holds a very special place in our hearts and when we heard almost 2 months ago that Mitsubishi is working on a FQ400 405-hp limited edition inspired by the 400-hp Mitsubishi Racing Lancer Evo X, you can be sure that we were very excited. Well, the new 2008/2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ400 has landed and it’s everything we expected although its not that different performance wise than the 2005 EVO FQ400.

Power comes from the same 2.0L engine but Mitsubishi has added a new turbocharger, exhaust manifold and revised ECU to extract a total of 405-hp and a peak torque of 298 lb-ft. That allows for a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.5 seconds. Upgrade brakes were added for some extra stopping power.

Appearance wise the new Lancer Evolution X FQ400 doesn’t look very different from the standard EVO but it does get minor changes like lightweight body panels, new vents near the foglamps for extra engine cooling, side sills and twin-pipe exhaust system.

Mitsubishi will only be producing 100 units of the FQ400 which will go on sale in the UK in March of 2009 with prices starting at £45,000 ($79,015 USD).

America is ready for an electric city car, and Mitsubishi, not Toyota, might just be the company to give it to us. Our brief drive of the i MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle) during last spring's New York auto show convinced us that this four-door Martian-mobile could play in Philadelphia, if not Peoria.

Like the Japanese-market i Car from which it is derived, the i MiEV has a rear-mounted powertrain. The lithium-ion batteries, which weigh about 450 pounds, are beneath the rear seats, and the electric motor, inverter charger, and other components are under the trunk area. Packaging the powertrain this way lowers the vehicle's center of gravity while maximizing room for passengers and luggage.

Mitsubishi Motors expects to distribute, on a maintenance lease basis, some 1,400 i-MiEV models in fiscal 2009 principally to corporations and to local authorities. The company plans to start sales of i-MiEV to individuals in April 2010 and will start taking orders in late July of this year.

The i-MiEV makes maximum use of the long wheelbase that stems from its base model the “i” minicar’s rear-midship layout to install a large capacity lithium-ion drive battery under the floor and the power unit under the luggage compartment. This provides a cruising range that is ample for everyday use without compromising the generous seating or luggage space of the “i.”

The introduction of the MiEV OS (MiEV Operating System) – an advanced integrated vehicle management system into which the company has poured its wealth of know-how garnered from many years of EV research and development – has provided the kind of high performance and reliability that befits a new-generation EV.

The i-MiEV uses a 3-way charging system that allows the drive battery to be charged at home or when out and about. For normal charging i-MiEV is connected to either a standard 100-volt or 200-volt domestic outlet using the charging cables supplied with the vehicle. The i-MiEV’s battery can also be “quick charged” at quick-charge stations which are currently being established throughout Japan.

The i-MiEV is powered by a very high energy-density lithium-ion battery manufactured by Lithium Energy Japan. The large-capacity drive battery is comprised of 88 lithium-ion cells connected in series and is installed under the floor in the center of the vehicle. This configuration contributes to outstanding handling and stability due to the car’s low center of gravity.

While there will be fewer cars at this year’s Tokyo auto show thanks to a mass pullout of non-Japanese carmakers from the biennial expo, the high number of automobiles containing multiple power sources means that total motor count may indeed remain the same. One car helping put the “motor” in the Tokyo Motor Show is the Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV, a handsome if disappointingly conventional-looking (for Tokyo, anyway) plug-in hybrid crossover. It contains one electric motor for the front wheels, another for the back, and a 114-hp four-cylinder gasoline engine that can serve either as a generator at low speeds or a source of supplemental propulsion at higher speeds.

In tech speak, that makes the PX-MiEV a hybrid that can operate in both series and parallel. It also can be front- or four-wheel drive depending on conditions. Plug-in charging of its batteries can be done using 100-volt, 200-volt, or high-power quick-charging power supplies. And if the PX-MiEV should find itself plugged in inside the family garage during the day, its battery system can be programmed to shunt power back to the home to keep from drawing power off the neighborhood grid during peak hours.

Mitsu claims that its new plug-in system significantly extends the frequency a hybrid vehicle is driven in EV mode and that, in this vehicle, it returns fuel economy to the rather impressive tune of 117 mpg. The PX-MiEV also features an adjustable air suspension and Mitsubishi’s all-new S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) that utilizes the company’s E-AYC (Electric-powered Active Yaw Control) to transfer torque between the rear wheels.

Inside, the Concept PX-MiEV coddles, protects, and practically disinfects passengers inside an interior that is the next best thing to a cryogenic chamber, including as it does odor- and bacteria-deactivating seat upholstery, a humidifier and oxygen regulator, anti-aging UV-A–filtering window glass, and a cockpit-like driver’s area with an alertness monitor that will emit a certain smell to tell you to pay attention.

Whew! If that sounds like a lot of technology, it is. Welcome to Tokyo, where there may not be many cars this year, but there’s still plenty of technology—and motors—to make things interesting.
